Primitive artifact to make fire
Here’s the story of a primitive artifact to make fire in Irecê-Bahia-Brazil.
The primitives watched the flames of fire, generated by umburana rubbing sticks on stone slabs. This happened while transporting the wood with animals.
So, they were inspired by this and started to make fire with imburana, a wood plentiful in the dry hinterland northeastern.
However, they did not make fire with imburana, for a long time. They found a more original way of making fire.
Invented the little artifact, shown in the picture which they called bogue.
Made the artifact like this:
They cut a piece of ox horn about ten centimeters from the tip. Then they cut the tip, leaving a small hole for the oxygen to enter.
Finally, they made a lid with a piece of the dry gourd. They used the lid to close the larger hole of the artifice.
Then they secured the lid on the artifact with a leather strap.
Making fire with bogue
When they needed fire, removed the bogue‘s cap. Next they hit the stone on the piece of iron.
The shock of the stone with steel produced sparks of fire. The sparks hit the cotton that filled the bogue.
Then they blew and produced the fire.
The father, the mother or a son went out in the afternoon, near dark. They were looking for wood to cook food.
As soon as they returned, they made a fire with the bogue. Then they threw dry wood over the fire. Soon after, they blew a lot for the fire to grow.
The next day, they used the live coals and continued their chores.
Those who liked to smoke were walking with the bogue in the pocket of the rustic clothes. They also kept the primitive artifact in the backpack.
When they felt like smoking, they picked up the bogue. They held the stone in the correct position and struck the iron in it. The generated spark passed to the cotton.
So they used the fire not only to light the cigarette, but also to other activities
At other times, they had to burn dry remains of trees in the field.
They made it this way. First, took well-dried animal manure. Then they set the bogue on fire and put it in the dung and blew a lot.
The fire grew and devoured the dry wood.
